Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) with the objective of improving the human resources in agricultural sector, transfer of agricultural technologies and the overall development came out with the mandate of establishing one KVK for every district in the country. It was realized during the course of implementation of the scheme of KVK that the vocational training only would not be useful unless it is followed up with frontline demonstrations in the farmer’s field in order to demonstrate the production potentialities of agricultural technologies.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is playing a major role in increasing the production, productivity of crops through technology transfer thereby improving the social and economic status of the rural people. It under takes On-farm testings, Frontline Demonstrations and based on the local problems it conducts different training programmes for the farmers, farmwomen, agriculture labourers and also to the officials of developmental departments. Further, KVK has carried out other extension activities like field visits, diagnostic visits, field days, group meetings/ discussions, FFS, exposure visits etc.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hassan was first established in Gunjevu village of Holenarasipura taluk during March 1992. Looking into the feasibility of location, the KVK Was shifted to Kandali, Hassan during May 1995.
Hassan district has four agro climatic zones viz., Central Dry Zone covers Arasikere taluk, Southern Dry Zone covers Channarayapatna taluk, Southern Transition Zone covers Alur, Arkalgud, Belur, Hassan & Holenarasipura taluk, Hilly Zone covers Sakleshpura, taluk. Coconut, Maize, Ragi, Paddy, Potato, Black Pepper, Coffee, Redgram, Bengal gram, Groundnut, Dairy, Backyard poultry, Sericulture and Piggery are the major crops and subsidiary enterprises.
